The Shifting Way on Listening to Music
Most people in the world love listening to music. You can find people with earphones hanging in their ear at the office, gym, commuter train, etc. As a fun fact: only 5% of the world are unable to enjoy music[1]. Considering this fact, so many digital companies created a product that can help people listening to wide-ranging music with ease.
Taking a trip down memory lane, I still vividly remember how I spent my days looking for the music I like at a Compact Disk (CD) store. Generation X and Generation Y must have experienced this activity before. Buying music CDs from the hot rising star would make you look cool. This habit underwent a shift in the early 2000s when people could easily find the song they want to listen to through a computer on the internet.
Nowadays, with the advancement of technology, we can merely grab our phone, connect to the internet, and play music directly from an application. Everything is accessible. No matter in what area and what time you are, you can always listen and hum to a song you like.
I will take Spotify, the music streaming provider that I love the most, as an example. Not only a broad spectrum of music, but now Spotify also offer us a various selection of podcast which can help us to stay educated and informed. Every product is fit into the user’s needs.
Spotify gives its user the experience of personalized music. If back then I had to sort my favorite song into several CDs, now I can save it to my Spotify library. I can make a playlist and share it with anyone else. They also provide the user with the list of song and music, generated based on what the user listen to and the artists the user follow.
Not able to catch up with today’s trend? No worries! They also create a chart of every country’s hit song.
Based on what I’ve described above, I can say that this company’s superiority is on they can use their data very well. They know how to make users feel attached to the application and attract new users to try it. For example, at the end of the year, the users will get a recap of their favorite singers and songs from all around the world; and total minutes spent on streaming the music. The user can share their recap on social media and eventually it will gain more attention.
In terms of legality, Spotify also solves the music piracy problem. According to CNBC, artists earn between $0.006 to $0.0084 per stream[2]. Therefore, say no to unverified music source anymore!
In brief, I love how Spotify can overcome several problems with a single application. I wonder what innovative and brilliant ideas they want to deliver in the future. Maybe we would not only listen to music but we also could feel the sensation of being a superstar synchronously! I can’t wait for this coming.
